Yin Lounge playlists

July 3rd, 2015 | No Comments

For as long as I have been teaching yoga, I have been asked to post my class playlists online. I have shared the odd playlist here and there, but resisted making them completely available publicly until now.

Coming from a previous career in the music industry, in addition to simply being a music nerd/snob, I always felt that there was an opportunity to bring music into the yoga studio that reached beyond the “traditional” kirtans, harps and tablas.

Dubbed “Yin Lounge” by a student, hopefully these playlists support students in the same way that the poses do.

Some have argued that music with audible vocals is incongruent with meditative yoga classes. Obviously I disagree. There is nothing like a U2 crescendo in the last 30 seconds of a hip-opener to carry you though, or a Marvin Gaye serenade to guide a release.

Of course these have evolved over time, regular students will recognize core songs. I have included links to a few anchor tracks.

So here, finally, are 10 weeks of Yin Lounge playlists.

Put your legs up a wall and enjoy.

An Anniversary, a Confession, and a Promise on Canada Day

July 1st, 2015 | No Comments

Today is a special anniversary for me. I am one year cancer-free.

What a difference a year makes. Last April I was diagnosed with prostate cancer – something I shared with only a small group of people. I am forever grateful for the friends and family who circled the wagons around me, and helped me through that journey. A year later, I feel amazing and have a beautiful fiancé to plan the future with.

I don’t like the term “cancer survivor” – at least not for me. I see myself as a cancer graduate. I’ve thought very long about putting this out there publicly, and feel that my role as a graduate is to pay it forward. One of the many things I learned in that education last year was that the wise council of other graduates makes a world of difference.

Recent studies suggest that 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. You will know someone who gets it. When it happens, I’m available to help them with their homework.

Happy Canada Day, indeed.
