An Anniversary, a Confession, and a Promise on Canada Day

July 1st, 2015 | No Comments

Today is a special anniversary for me. I am one year cancer-free.

What a difference a year makes. Last April I was diagnosed with prostate cancer – something I shared with only a small group of people. I am forever grateful for the friends and family who circled the wagons around me, and helped me through that journey. A year later, I feel amazing and have a beautiful fiancé to plan the future with.

I don’t like the term “cancer survivor” – at least not for me. I see myself as a cancer graduate. I’ve thought very long about putting this out there publicly, and feel that my role as a graduate is to pay it forward. One of the many things I learned in that education last year was that the wise council of other graduates makes a world of difference.

Recent studies suggest that 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. You will know someone who gets it. When it happens, I’m available to help them with their homework.

Happy Canada Day, indeed.

In 2005 I was working my dream job. I was in the industry I had always wanted to be in, and had a great position at the largest and most powerful company in the game. I had the opportunity to participate in amazing events, meet cultural influencers, and was afforded the freedom to pursue my own projects on the side.

I was out for lunch today with a buddy of mine who just got back from a 2-year trip around the world. He saved up some money, quit his job, and hit 70 countries in that time. I know – jealous!

More wine! Already drunk on sunshine, it almost seems appropriate to be so audacious and commanding of a perfect day. Almost – it isn’t quite noon. Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, a defiance of the fear of death, provides an added boldness. The cigar also helps. My yoga teacher will offer a practice for protecting oneself from any surrounding negative energy by instructing you to channel a while light through the top of your head, and projecting a gold shell around you. My cigar is my gold shell. With it I feel bullet proof. While the smoke does provide a visual shell of sorts, it is more about the fact that you can’t really DO anything while smoking a cigar. The person smoking a cigar at a wedding is the one who remains at one table for hours, with conversation coming to him. Smoking a cigar necessitates holding court, as it were. More wine!
